Things you need to know about Toyota 1KD Turbocharger P1251 Error Code

The most common problem with Toyota 1KD turbos is the electronic actuator failure. In most of the cases, it comes up with a P1251 error code. The fault code itself is due to the turbo over-boosting in the lower load points. Its described as ‘failed stepper motor’ but its commonly not the case.

THE CAUSE

- Turbocharger actuator failure
The electronic actuator failure is the most common issue that cause the error code. It can be easily fixed by replacing the actuator or complete turbocharger.

- Damaged Variable Vanes
Damaged variable vanes will absolutely affect the air flow and throw the error code. It is common to see the variable vanes are damaged by chipped turbine wheels in 1KD turbochargers.

- Sticky Variable Vanes
Too much carbon deposit in the vanes will make the vanes sticky and jammed sometimes. Sticky variable vanes will also throw a code.

- Actuator driver failure
The actuator driver failure is another cause of the P1251 code. The turbocharger actuator driver it is an external computer system from the main ECU, it is not the actual turbo electronic actuator.

THE SOLUTION

First, you will need to diagnose the causes for the error code. A professional mechanic or turbo expert is recommended. At Turbopros, we supply both the electronic actuator and complete turbocharger for your Toyota Hilux / HiAce / Landcruiser Prado 1KD-FTV turbocharger.
