What you should check when installing a turbocharger for Hyundai iLoad/iMax

Turbocharger failures on the Hyundai iLoad / iMax D4CB 2.5L engine are common and a few things should be checked before installing a new iLoad turbocharger.

First, please find out why the current turbo needs to be replaced. In another words, why the turbo was failed and what caused the failures. Then you should fix the issue accordingly.

Turbocharger failures are not limited to the turbo itself. The items listed below are recommended to check or replace when you are installing a turbocharger for your Hyundai iLoad.

1. Intercooler & Intercooler Pipes
The intercooler should be removed, cleaned and pressure tested for leaks. Intercooler should be replaced if it leaks air. intercooler pipes should also be checked as well.

2. Air Mass Sensor / Meter
Air mass sensor is recommend to be replaced or cleaned properly. a contaminated air mass sensor will give an incorrect voltage signal back to the engine ECU, which can cause the engine to over-fuel and over-boost, contributing to turbo failures.

3. Turbo Vacuum Control Solenoid
The turbo speed and boost pressure is controlled by the turbo vacuum control solenoid, this is now fitted with a small accumulator box for storage of vacuum. There has been no information or reason found so far for this modification. We have seen turbo failures due to this valve being faulty and causing excessive boost pressure.

4. Oil Supply
The oil supply must be tested. Oil pressure and flow must be tested, as well as how quickly it builds up. A 2 to 5 second period during cranking seems to be normal, and if this is exceeded the engine oil pump will need to be checked. The oil feed line needs to be replaced. The oil pan / sump must be removed and the oil pump pick up screen be inspected for blockages. If a blockage is found, it is recommended that the crankshaft bearings are inspected.

5. EGR Valve Operation
Exhaust gas recirculation valve operation also needs to be tested, as this can also contribute to an over-fuelling issue and turbocharger over speed problems.

6. Boost Pressure Sensor
The turbo boost sensor should be replaced. It is prone to contamination and damage from excessive oil inside the intercooler when the turbocharger fails.
