Turbo Buyers Guide For Ford Ranger
Australia's Favourite - Ford Ranger
There's a good reason why the Ranger has such a strong following Down Under. With its roomy interior, rugged exterior, decent carrying and towing capability and a well-sorted, locally-developed suspension - the Ranger is ideally suited for Australian conditions. Add to it a huge aftermarket support and it's not hard to see why Ford just can't make them quickly enough to supply the demand.
The Ranger has been in Australia for 25 years, and over that time it has evolved from a simple, utilitarian workhorse to a fully-featured, aggressively styled, lifestyle vehicle that's just as comfortable on suburban roads as it is in extreme off-road conditions.
1998-2006 Ranger/Courier PE, PG, PH
Introduced in 1998 and sold under a Ranger and Courier name, this tradies’ favourite certainly put function over form. Having said that, it’s incredible just how many of these early utes are still running and working today! Engine options included a 2.6L petrol four, a 2.5L diesel, a 2.5L turbo-diesel.
2006-2011 Ranger PJ, PK
A comprehensive redesign saw the “Courier” badge dropped to distance the new Ranger from its basic, workhorse cousin. Two four-cylinder common-rail turbo-diesel engines were on offer in either 2.5L or 3.0L capacity. The Ranger received a PK facelift in 2009, and a top-level sport trim called Wildtrak was added to the line-up.

The Ranger, as we know it today, arrived on the Australian car scene in 2011. The PX was powered by a variety of engines but the most popular choices were turbo diesels available in a 2.2L four-cylinder or the more powerful 3.2L five-cylinder versions.

2018-22 Ranger PX3
2018 saw another update, with an updated interior as well as new engine and transmission options. The PX3 was powered by a 2L, four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel or a 3.2L, five-cylinder turbo diesel. Both were mated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission.
It was also around this time that Ford introduced the Ranger Raptor aimed at the performance off-road market. Powered by the 2L, four-cylinder, twin-turbo diesel, the Raptor was bristling with high-end off-road mods including FOX Racing suspension.
